New Muse Single: "Supermassive Black Hole"

To preface: Yes, I know Stereogum just posted this, but I've had this post written for two days (I just wanted to give Anathallo some time at the top of the page) and I feel like I might as well still post it. Plus, there's some sweet mash up goodness included here.

So, last week or so I posted that Muse would be releasing the lead single from their upcoming fourth full-length album, titled Black Holes and Revelations, in the first week at June, and that I'd be sure to get it to you guys as soon as it was released/leaked. However, the song leaked this weekend and (as a result?) the single's release date has been pushed up to, well, today. Beginning today in the UK, the single, titled "Supermassive Black Hole", will be available on iTunes and at all CD retailers and whatnot.

After a couple run throughs of the track, I'm not completely sold. I much prefer the piano/keyboard-based epic rock of songs like "Butterflies & Hurricanes" and "Bliss", and "Supermassive Black Hole" airs much more on the side of dancier glam-rock. In fact, vocals aside, the song sounds exactly like it could just be a dance remix of "Time Is Running Out", the song that brought Muse up and out from the depths of obscurity on this side of the pond. I mean seriously, and especially at the beginning, it's just like they kept the same melody and transposed a club-friendly dance beat onto it. I'm still not sure how I feel about it, but I remain fairly optimistic for the quality of Black Holes and Revelations (apparently lead singer Matt Bellamy said there was a song even more over-the-top and bombastic then "Butterflies & Hurricanes", which would be, well, amazing), which drops in the UK on June 12th. Check it out for yourself below, and again, if you're a representative of Muse and would like me to remove the song, just contact me and I will take it down without resistance.

Big thanks to Taylor from Music For Kids Who Can't Read Good, who hooked me up with this track.

UPDATE: In the comments, Iain from Delete As Appropriate brought to my attention that apparently "Supermassive Black Hole" has been getting a lot of comparisons to Britney Spears "Do Something". Now I don't specifically remember hearing the Spears track (though its probably been playing in the background at a party or club I've been to or something), the two songs are definitely very similar, and as proof of this someone on the Muse forums (credited as Citizen Erased) created a really well-done mash up of the two songs, which you can and should check out below. The song came with the generic title "Supermassive Black Hole vs. Do Something", so I've taken the liberty of renaming it in typical mash up style, to "Do Something Supermassive", I hope nobody minds.

Normally when I heard a song for the first time and I like it meaning I would like it like forever but when I heard Supermassive Black Hole it certainly wasn't love at first sight....maybe I need to listen to it for a couple more times....

I've been a muse fan forever (almost), and I like it. I don't think the whole album will be this disco, but I won't mind too much if it is.

LOL. It's total crap. Crap on a stick waved under your grandma's nose.

This band has always been a 'follower'. Now they seem to following Goldfrapp.

I love the Muse track, but I have to express my complete and utter hatred of mashups. Please, please, let this genre die.

I used to live in England and once saw Muse supported by Coldplay, in Liverpool. Possibly The Lomax, the one with an upstairs anyway..

I love Muse but...

I don't know.

It sort of sounds like Scissor Sisters getting together with Goldfrapp, covering a T-Rex track, and throwing in some Queen samples.

Not sold on this one.

not entirely bad... the only problem is is that it just isn't muse!! someone said scissor sisters and i completely agree. I really like muse, but i just hope they're not gonna fall into a (excuse the pun) supermassive blackhole with this next album!

I think its great. to hell with it being not "muse" this is the new muse. way to go muse! although it does sound a lot like do somethin... It wasn't much of a shock to me. Actually, I was very relieved, cause I heard this song was like this complete departure from previous works, but thank god it is this good.^^

Most of you are bashing it for the sake of bashing it. At least it's different and they've stepped outside their comfort zone. This isn't bad. Bad is the new Yeah Yeah Yeah's arthouse piece of shit.

At first it was a little "Prince" like for me... it kind of reminds me of Time is running Out. If this was released by someone other than Muse I would have liked it right off the bat. Maybe I just expected differently. It's growing on me.

the new single isnt muse
the muse i know is awesome, atmospheric songs like citizen erazed and hysteria, not a chart freindly darkness style heap of cheese

Muse... the name, the songs and even the people, they all meant so much to me.. I loved their music, but ever since the release of Absolution, a decidedly pop and mainstream CD I have become disillusioned.. In fact ever since their first release (Showbiz) the band have gone downhill, and seemingly employed the role of the typical commercialised, sheep music... What on earth where they thinking?? Im hoping their manager held them at gun point and threatened them to make something utterly typical and boring.. If any member of Muse ever looks at this.. please.. I emplore you, return to your original style of music.. Because right now you sound like an awful blend of Scissor Sisters, computer generated drum beats and whats worse, this latest song sounds like it was entirely engineered with the help of a studio.. i.e. it is not possible without computers and new audio techonology.. that is not what music is about! Where have the days of the 4 track gone... Black Sabbath recorded their first album all in one take.. I guess the music really has died..

Although I don't really like the new single, Knights of Cydonia and Starlight absolutely rock. If the album is more like the latter, I will be incredibly happy.

And.. just... wow to the above comment. I can't believe you wasted that much time on such an emo post.

I think the point is we already have 3 dark albums by muse, and if they brought out another I'm pretty sure it'd get boring pretty quick. If you give this song an open mind I'm sure most people would like it. I'm glad they've took another direction, after all, if i wanted to listen to something that sounds like origin of symmetry, I have origin of symmetry.

Thank god muse doesn't listen to what some of you are saying. one of you said that muse has gone downhill since showbiz. You have to be kidding! Absolution: mainstream pop? mate, you haven't heard whats on the radio for a long tome have you? When absolution was released, jet and similar bands were the mainstream sound. Muse tried very hard (and succeeded) to distance themselves from this. Name one band that stockholm syndrome sounds like, and, well, you get the picture. Absolution was a big risk, and that ain't a mainstream tendancy. Supermassive black hole has grown on me big time. fantastic song.

This is the best thing they've done, ever.
Stop whining, all you people claiming it 'just isn't like Muse', because frankly that sound was getting tired. Very tired.

This rules, and is almost as good as the Britney track.
