Gnarls Barkley: "Crazy" (Live on Top Of The Pops)
Gnarls Barkley's St. Elsewhere is an album that I would consider an early competitor for my year-end best list. Absolutely unique and defying any genre stereotypes, Dangermouse and Cee-Lo have crafted a 30-minute wake-up call to the hip-hop underground: if you're good enough, you can rise to the top. Dangermouse has managed to evolve from Beatles + Hov mashmaker to acclaimed major-label producer (for Gorillaz' Demon Days) while staying in tune with the indie rap scene with his collaboration with MF Doom, as Dangerdoom. Cee-Lo has always hovered on the brink of mainstream rap, with a few singles (like the excellent "I'll Be Around") that weren't as noticed by the radio as they should've been, and I relish the irony that it was only when he shifted his mainstream capabilities to indie sensibilities that he broke in to the charts in a big way.
By now you've all probably heard about Gnarls Barkley's record-breaking run to the top of the United Kingdom singles charts; lead single "Crazy" is the first ever single to make it to the number one spot before the physical single was released. This marked a few things for me: one, downloading is a legitimate moneymaker, two, when something is just great, it can and will make its way on to the charts, and three, the UK is better than the US at appreciating good music. Another thing "Crazy"'s astronomical rise to the top of the charts did was earn Gnarls Barkley a chance to perform on England's Top of the Pops. I'm sure a lot of you have seen this video, which has been making the rounds of the blogosphere in some fashion, but I can't stress enough how great it is. Gnarls slows "Crazy" way down and throws in an epic string section, while Cee-Lo's voice has never sounded so soulful. A legitimately great singer, Cee-Lo absolutely kills it on stage here, hitting all the notes he's reaching for and unrelentingly sending shivers down my spine and goosebumps up my arms. I implore you to watch the video below:
Also, to sweeten the deal, I'm putting up an mp3 of the performance I ripped. It took me quite a few tries to get a high-enough-quality version to post here, but I admit that the quality isn't exactly top-notch. Definitely worth the download, though, as though "Crazy" isn't my favorite track off St. Elsewhere ("Just A Thought" probably holds that distinction right now), this particular version is easily one of the top five songs I've heard this year. Pick it up below:
MP3: Gnarls Barkley - "Crazy" (Live on TOTP) [highly recommended]
NOTE: Unfortunately, I can't post any of the great songs from St. Elsewhere, as I know other bloggers have gotten in to some trouble with Gnarls' record label for that, but I [highly recommend] purchasing it; it's currently available from iTunes but I'd go ahead and pick up a physical copy if I were you. Also, if you are a representative of Gnarls Barkley and would like this mp3 taken down, I would be more than happy to do so, just send me an email.

Brilliant... thank you for posting the video. It is indeed brilliant.
Thank God the bloggers got in trouble - you guys abuse the priviledge sometimes by posting WAY too many songs.
Yeah, the UK does just rock, doesn't it? ;) But as for a better music scene/chart - heh, try living here.
Thanks a lot for the 'Crazy' download, it's still fab even after being vastly overplayed. I *love* your site - of all the MP3 blogs I visit, yours was the first I ever came across and still my favourite by a country mile!

Anybody else find it a bit ironic that Danger Mouse broke out with The Grey Album because of the Internet and bloggers, and now his record company is so against it? Maybe that's just me. But regardless, great stuff.
i feel stupid for liking something out of a silly chartsshow like top of the pops.
but this was brilliant.
thank you.
A little hint of N.E.R.D. there with some definitely more soulful vocals.
I like it, but I think Ray Lamontange's (thats probably spelled completely wrong, sorry) is a lot better.
Top of the Pops does not belong to England. It's shown all over the uk.
@jonk: It's not really ironic. It would be ironic if he started out being against the music industry and then became hugely successful because of it. What this is called is consistent.
Great post. Also as a couple of people have mentioned, you have some extra http:// kinda stuff in front of your EZarchive link. Cheers!
Just saw Gnarls at Coachella and he blew the roof off the tent! It was insanely amazing!
Is it possible to download this video clip? If so, how???
Superb.
Only sometimes do I regret giving up TV several months ago. Only sometimes....
Keep up the excellent work guys.
Jonk, who commented above is a student in Madison Wisconsin & apparently he still needs schoolin'...
I 'm sure when his ability to pat his student loans is threatened when his album is fully ripped & posted by every half wit "blogger" around the world, he'll understand...
oh that's right, Jonk doesn't make any creative contributions to the world of note, and his finances are likely handled by his parents, plus a combo of state & bank loans...
which in the end, is sort of like being on a label that invests in you, and then actually that wants to recoup...
be cool, stay in school Jonk...
Woah! just got the goosebumps as i read the text above the totps video....Wohay!
HELZBELZ
OMFG this song from Gnarls is awesome. Tks for sharing.

Thanks a tonne for the MP3. I hope this version gets a proper release, 'cause oddly it's better than the original. It would be great to hear a high fidelity (non MP3) version of it...
thank god, my search can finally stop. THANK YOU for posting this song, isn't it amazing, what a great retake on a already superb track, i recomend smiley faces as well
If you can track it down they did a grittier slow version on Later... (the best live music show on British TV -BBC2-, and has been for a while). Nevertheless, great work on the mp3. Even if it is lo-fi it still gets you somewhere deep inside.
